My name is Katherine Bowers and during the day I’m an epidemiologist and on the research faculty at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. Outside of working hours I’m often coaching girls lacrosse, including girls from 3rd grade through the Varsity Girls team at Walnut Hills High School. I have two girls in CPS, a 6th grader at Hyde Park School and a 10th grader at Walnut. I grew up in Ithaca, NY, but met my future husband at college in Ohio (Oberin College) and after living in D.C. for many years, moved to Cincinnati nearly 10 years ago.
Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My husband Blake is from Cincinnati and currently works at US bank. My daughters are Tyler and Quinn.
Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
After spending 4 years in college coaching (soccer and lacrosse), I decided to go to graduate school in public health. During my MPH program I was introduced to epidemiolgy and knew I had found my career. After a obtaining my PhD, I did a post-doc in the D.C. area at NIH and then moved to Cincinnati for my faculty position. What I love about my position here is that my research is within the Cincinnati community. I study how family environements (particularly adversity) can affect child development and what some of the underlying biologic pathways may be. Lacrosse-wise, I love how I get to work with kids of all ages! My favorite aspect of coaching is introducing the sport to kids that are eager to learn.
What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
Taglio, Deweys, most breweries – some favorites being Nine Giant, Madtree and Little Miami Brewing.
How long have you lived or worked in our community?
9 years!
Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
This is a hard one — I get to meet a lot of people, but I don’t get to know them as well as I’d like.
If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would it be and why?
It’s not right now… but the trip I’m dreaming up is the 2023 womens world cup which will be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand. Getting to see the best women’s soccer players in the world while traveling to a new part of the world would be a perfect trip for my family!
What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
One of my favorite movies, since I just rewatched it, is A Few Good Men. For TV shows I love English crime shows. As a family, we love Derry Girls, which everyone in my family loves even re-watching multiple times!
What advice would you give to people?
Spend time doing only the things you love (not things other people want you to do) and with the people you love.
What is something on your bucket list?
Travel – I’m not an adrenaline junky – no sky diving or cliff jumping — I just want to travel to see beautiful places.
What is your go to music when you can’t decide what to listen to?
LIVE
What current or former local business makes you the most nostalgic about our community?
Zips!
If you could choose anyone that is alive today and not a relative; with whom would you love to have lunch? Why? And where locally would y’all meet for this lunch?
Hillary Clinton – Sorry to choose a politician, but she has had so many firsts as a woman and impresses me with all she has accomplished particularly with CHIP and promoting health care. I think Zips for a burger and beer would work fine!
What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
My favorite thing about the community (but what can also be annoying:)) is the love of all things Cincinnati! I mean, Cincinnatians love this place. I do agree is a great place to live and raise your kids.
Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
5 years – right here and probably doing similar things, since our youngest daughter will still be in high school. 10 years could be different at least in terms of how we spend our time!
What is something interesting that most people don’t know about you?
While sports take up a lot of my time these days, through high school I played violin and piano.
What is the most beautiful place you have ever been?
I’m not sure if it’s the most beautiful, but we went to Sedona, AZ this summer and it was definitely an amazing place.
Favorite month? favorite holiday? and best single day on the calendar?
June – school is out, summer weather and likely thinking about vacation. Favorite holiday – Christmas which is really the only holiday we spend with family
What would you rate a 10 out of 10?
FCC games.
Who inspires you to be better?
My girls — setting an example is very important to me.
What is one or two of your favorite smells?
Dinner cooking when I come home and realize my husband has taken care of it (not unusual…)
Finally, what 3 words or phrases come to mind when you think of the word HOME?
Family, slight chaos and also relaxation (if that’s possible to have both)
Final Note: Katherine’s passion for the sport has added value to both the high school and youth programs. Teaching lacrosse has served to draw more kids into the sport from all over the city. And for that we thank you!
