Courtney Carroll

Hey ya’ll! My name is Courtney Carroll. I’m so “Cincinnati since my Momma had me.” I believe that I have a natural light and God given confidence that makes people feel very comfortable with me. I truly enjoy encouraging people to be the best versions of themselves and helping them find ways to walk in their authentic calling. I’m funny in real life. I have so many amazing friends and my family is full of gems. I have had so many different life experiences that it provides me a skill to be able to connect with others wherever I go. I love that part of my life. I can pray with you, finish the lines of Alanis Morissette “Ironic”or rap  “Too Short”, draw a picture, dance until the sun comes up, or meditate with you at Eden park. I call it balance.

Please tell us a little bit about your family.
My family loves to have kids. They’re professional kid haver’s! I have over 25 nieces and nephews. My grandfather was a dentist and he was born in 1898. He owned his own practice in East Walnut Hills. I have that Black Excellence running through my veins. My family is full of entrepreneurs, artists, mental health professionals, nurses, coaches, teachers and soon to be lawyers. We lit! Gang!

Please tell us about your current, past, or future career. What do you love most about what you do?
I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Ohio. What I love most about what I do is the fact it’s natural. I don’t have to force it.I love to connect with people, educate them about wellness and I provide a safe place for them to tell their stories. It is one of the thoughts that God had towards me in my mothers womb, so it feels good to be where I was called.

What are a couple of your favorite restaurants in our community?
A couple!? Nostalgia, Losanti, City Bird, Hooks (Don’t judge me), Senate, Cream and Sugar and of course Black Coffee.

How long have you lived or worked in our community?
The first job I ever had working in the community was at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. I was 15 years old and I was a part of their program PSI (Postponing Sexual Involvement). We went into inner city schools, we gave the students facts on staying healthy sexually and the importance of making mature sexual choices.

Who is the most interesting person you’ve met here in our community?
The most interesting person that I have met in our community would have to be a man named Blackie that used to own Bohemian Cafe on Ludlow. I was in grad school and I would spend countless hours there. He would tell me about his life, the secrets to staying young, and how to be present. He told me I was going to be successful. He would do this weird vanishing thing after we had these enlightening conversations. He later sold the place and moved to Cali.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I would follow the exact steps of Julia Roberts in the movie ” EAT, PRAY,LOVE.” Italy, India, Indonesia.

What is one of your favorite movies? TV shows?
The Office. They helped me through depression, heartache, and anxiety. It was literally a coping skill for me. “Beetsbearsbattlestargalatica.”

What is your favorite thing or something unique about our community?
I don’t know if I have a favorite thing yet about our community. I feel as if it’s easier for me to say “my” community as a black woman in Cincinnati. The space I have here freely is limited, but where I do go is inclusive.

Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?
I lost one of my good friends suddenly in 2018. She was prepared for tomorrow and didn’t make it through the night. I’m still personally repairing how to see life 5 years from now, I’ve healed enough to plan out 2 years. Love you Brittney!
